Living Life with Intention: Habits vs. Intentions on the Road to Self Discovery

We are inspired this week by the idea of living life with intention. On our road to self discovery, what do we intentionally include or look for in our lives? Do we pay attention to what nourishes our creativity? What happens when we are intentional about who and what we include in our lives?

Lynne Bryan Phipps, Inspirited Living’s founder, shared some thoughts about what it feels like when we allow ourselves to experience joy.

Living Life with Intention: What Brings you Joy?

What brings you joy? This can feel like a simple question but when was the last time you took a moment with yourself to choose more of what brings you joy? If not joy, what is filling our lives instead?

When was the last time you looked at your morning routine and considered whether it supports your path to self discovery? Do you make coffee, stop for coffee, or drink coffee at work without really enjoying the way it tastes and smells? Does the way you do your morning feel like a routine or a ritual? Is it calming and setting the tone for the day or does it make you jumpy and nervous? Does your morning ritual bring you joy?

On the road to self discovery, we sometimes have to take a close look at our habits and determine if we like the underlying intentions as we try to find what really nourishes our mind-body-soul connection.

Habits vs. Intentions

Habits are the patterns that our brains form consisting of a trigger, a routine we perform, and a reward. It’s a kind of three step loop or habit circle that we record in our brains so that we can cover everyday things like brushing our teeth, parking the car, walking the dog, and making coffee without really paying attention to them.

There are lots of books on bestseller lists about habits. This NPR interview on Fresh Air, is talking about “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg.

“The Power of Habit” helps break down the triggers for certain habits and how to recognize when advertisements prompt you, or trigger a habit. Marketers and advertisers are extremely good at hijacking the habit circle to get us to buy a product, for example.

Intentions vs. Habits

Living Life with Intention- Habits vs. Intentions on the Road to Self Discovery

Intentions, as Lynne Bryan Phipps, shared in an earlier post, start with paying attention to what YOU are drawn to…

Intentions are about paying attention to what feels good to YOU…

On the road to self discovery, intentions are about noticing and bringing your awareness to what you need. Intentions are about making deliberate choices that support you, not what the outside world tells you is important.

Intentions are also about prioritizing what is important vs. what’s easy.

How you do design an intentional life?

Lynne Bryan Phipps has some new courses coming this year that guide you through how to design an intentional life. Stay tuned for the sign up links!

Her first step in designing an intentional life on the road to self discovery, is to ground and bring your awareness to what feels comfortable and expansive in your own body. Then notice what feels tight or nervous, or anxious.

As you notice the discomfort, it’s important to know that the goal is not about changing or fixing or judging any part of your experience, it’s just about noticing what feels uncomfortable.

Lynne’s second step is curiosity and compassion.

Ask yourself, what’s the discomfort about? Why do I feel it? What’s making my shoulder’s tight or my neck tense? Why does my stomach feel icky? Curiosity without judgment is a kind and compassionate approach on the path to self discovery. What does the world feel like to you? Why does it feel that way?

Inspirited Living’s third step to designing an intentional life is moving towards what feels good. This can be the most difficult part of the intention. Not just setting it, but acting on it.   There’s often so much self-judgment about doing our chores before we play. We can get so fixated on doing that we forget how to take time to just be.

If you are struggling on how to turn towards what feels good, give your body a break with some forest bathing. Give your creative brain a chance to engage with some stunning art from South Africa. Give your soul a chance to soak up the joy of lavender by engaging the senses.

Stay tuned for more from Lynne on Inspirited Living Courses about designing an intentional life that works for you!

Self Discovery: Habits vs. Intentions

So why does this matter from an Inspirited Living perspective? By bringing your awareness to your daily activities and really noticing what you spend time on, how you start your day, where you eat your breakfast, who you spend time with, YOU can start creating a life You love.  An intentional life.

Try Inspirited Living’s morning ritual to design an intentional start to the day that works for you. Notice what you are drawn to. Notice when a habit is triggered and ask yourself: I wonder what that’s about? Does that really bring me closer to what I want? On my road to self discovery, is there something that would feel better? Is there something else I could choose, or try, or experience that would feed my soul more?On the journey to self awareness, we can be very deliberate and intentional about what we allow into our lives. On the road to self discovery, you can choose where you focus your energy.

Try asking yourself: Does your morning ritual nourish and support your creativity? Does the food you chose support your body?  Does it give you what you need to be healthy? Does your focus outside your home support your intention to be calm?  Would more time in and around nature be helpful? Would some support or help from Lynne and the Inspirited Living community help you to shift from habits that are unfulfilling to intentions?

Inspirited Rituals: A Grounding Morning Ritual

Inspirited Rituals: A Grounding Morning RitualAs the seasons shift and the light changes, our schedules can shift, too. Perhaps the early morning sun through the curtains that prompted you awake at 5am has changed to 6am? Maybe you want a few extra minutes asleep because your days seemed filled? …And then, are scrambling all day to catch up and never quite feel like yourself?

We are thinking this week about how to make a morning ritual for the new season. Our mission at Inspirited Living is to build a community and life that inspires, uplifts, and supports. So, what’s the best way to design a morning ritual that supports you? What’s the kindest and most uplifting way to start your day?

Take a look at our post on being kind to yourself as the season changes and why the changing light can have such a profound effect on how we feel!

Inspired Rituals: Calming the Mind with Lavender Buds to Help Fall Asleep

We want to establish a morning ritual that works for us when the season changes. So what’s the best way to stick to our morning ritual? We start the night before…

When we have a few moments before settling in for the night, we can set the conditions for the morning ritual we need. At Inspirited Living we love using our own small batch lavender water to create a calming oasis before bedtime. Sprayed on pillowcases and bed-linens, it’s calming and relaxing. We love making some chamomile or our own lavender bud infusion tea to settle down a restless mind. By taking a moment to support ourselves we are practicing basic self-compassion.

Why is lavender good to help calm a racing mind? How does lavender help you sleep? Scientists have found that lavender’s main compounds, linalyl acetate and linalool actually block the uptake of stress hormones. So, lavender helps our systems slow down, calm down, and relax enough to help us fall asleep. Being rested and calm is the kindest gift of self-compassion we can give ourselves to start our day!

Inspired Rituals: Morning Rituals Help us Feel Calm all Day

Where to start with a morning ritual without firing your mind up about all the things on the schedule for day? It’s a balancing act! How can we be in the moment and fully present in our lives without feeling anxious about the next day?

Perhaps it is as simple as choosing your clothes for the day? Notice which fabrics feel good. Are you seeking out soft and cuddly textures? Are you drawn to more formal or structured clothes? Take a moment to ask yourself, why is that? Am I relaxed and comfortable about my day or anticipating that I need some amour?

The little rituals support our intentions in two ways. Morning rituals help you calm your mind NOW with repetition.  Morning rituals for busy people also create new patterns of behavior that support us so we can make better choices ALL DAY. Morning rituals can also help you practice mindfulness about how you want to experience your day. You can set the intention to be calm and curious before you leap into the day.

Take a moment to listen to Inspirited Living’s founder, Lynne Bryan Phipps’ thoughts on shifting awareness as the seasons change.

How to Create a Morning Ritual: Grounding and Being Present

One of the easiest ways to start our day in a kind and self-compassionate way is to ground ourselves before we leap into action. How tempting is it to leap out of bed and throw ourselves into the busyness of the day? How many times have you launched into motion in the morning and never stopped until you collapse exhausted at the end of the day?

Did you know you can choose to experience life in a calm, inspiring, supportive, and uplifting way? From and Inspirited Living perspective, we can choose how we are present in our lives by making some deliberate choices…

One of the easiest ways to start our day in a kind and self-compassionate way is to ground ourselves before we leap into action. Perhaps you can do this from bed when you first start to wake up? Grounding is simply about settling your mind by bringing your awareness to each part of your body.

Morning Ritual: How to Ground?

Inspirited Rituals: A Grounding Morning RitualStart with the visualization of your roots going down into the ground. It lets our minds drift towards the sturdy strength of trees. Tapping into the energy of the earth. Connecting ourselves with the living world and reminding us that we are part of something vast, powerful, and beautiful.

Some people like to name each part of their body to bring the touch of awareness to their conscious mind. Moving our awareness to our feet, legs, stomach, heart and lungs, arms, shoulders, head, face, ears and eyes. Some people bring awareness to the 7 chakras, finishing with the Sahasrara chakra, which connects us to all living things.

Naming each place or chakra can help us notice: where are we holding tension and where are we relaxed? Where does energy flow through us and where does it get a little stuck? Just noticing helps us settle down our nervous systems, relax our guard, and open our minds to noticing all the amazing things the day will bring.

In the Moment: Human Doing vs. Human Being

Why does a morning grounding ritual help with anxiety and stress? Calming your mind now allows you to drop out of the “doing” part of your mind. That’s the part that leaps into action to save the day. Think of it like a superhero part of your mind!

We like superheroes! We need that superhero part to leap in with adrenaline to save the day!

But the superhero isn’t meant to run the show all the time. Everyone’s super action hero gets to slip into something cosy and relax until they are needed again. When the doing part of our minds relaxes, it makes room for the creative part can take over.

Morning Rituals: Why does Awareness Matter?

It can feel counter-intuitive. We have a full day ahead of us. So shouldn’t we just leap up and get on with it? Why bother with grounding? Why spend time developing and practicing a morning ritual?

The gentle touch of awareness helps us experience the day from a different mindset. Grounding as a morning ritual is a way to shift our minds out of the fight or flight mode. We can trigger that reaction by the alarm sounding, by the first thoughts of “I’m late!” and by our anticipation of challenges to come.

When we take a moment to ground ourselves, we can shift perspectives. We can allow our nervous system to start from a calm place. We can give ourselves the gift of curiosity and creativity. Our intuition and imagination can start playing with the activities of the day. That sense of play can create new connections, new ideas, new options, and open our senses to the beauty of the day.

Living Life With Intention. You Matter. In this Moment

As the world around us starts to ramp up with Autumn busyness, we can experience both anxiety and excitement. Grief and sadness can show up hand in hand with laughter and joy.

One moment to the next, it can be difficult to focus on how we feel and what we want to experience. How can we live life with intention? In the midst of being overwhelmed we wonder, how can we be self-compassionate and kind instead of being caught up in the anxiety of the season?

We thought it might be helpful if Lynne Bryan Phipps, Inspirited Living’s founder, shared some thoughts this week about how to take a moment just to be with ourselves. Living life with intention is easier that it seems. As she often says, part of #LivingInspirited is being compassionate and kind with our minds and bodies one shining moment at a time.

Living Life With Intention: It Starts with One Shining Moment

“Mining the moment for something that feels good, something to appreciate, something to savor, something to take in, that’s what your moments are about.

Moments are not about justifying your existence.
It’s justified. You exist.
It’s not about proving your worthiness.
It’s done. You’re worthy.

It’s not about achieving success.
You will never get everything done.

It’s about “How much can I stay connected and enjoy this moment?”

No one’s taking score.
You get to choose.

The only measurement is the quality of your experience.
In my book, the quality of my experience equals how much joy I eek out of each moment of my life.”
I do that one experience at a time. You can too!

Living Life With Intention: How do I stay in the moment?

Living Life With Intention. You Matter. In this MomentHow can we stay in the moment? How can I live life with intention?
Simply asking the question can open a world of possibilities to each one of us!
What came after the question? Were you able to consider the moment or did you notice that your mind was racing ahead? Did your mind jump to the next place or thing? Did you notice that your focus was on worrying about what might happen in the future?

When you deliberately move your awareness to this place, and this moment in time, what happens?
Are you suddenly able to notice what’s around you? Are you in a place and space you want to be?
Is it beautiful? Does it feel good? if so, let it in. Move towards it.

What if you in a place or with people you don’t enjoy. It’s important to realize. Can you move away? Can you choose not to be around it in the future? What happens in your body when you realize you have a choice?
Are you able to breathe easier? Noticing and bringing our awareness to this time, this place, is so powerful when our minds are racing ahead.

Living Life With Intention: You are Enough

This balancing act between being in the moment and the daily urges that help us get things done takes lifelong practice. It’s about being aware of how it feels to be a human being, not a human doing.

A human being is enough.

Just because you are, you are enough. You are always enough. Really knowing that we are enough is a mindset and it takes practice. Allow the awareness to seep in. Allow yourself time to wallow in that awareness. Most mindfulness and meditation practices start with grounding—the process of bringing our attention from the outside to the inside.

Living Life With Intention: Mining the Moment

The minutiae of the day has a seductive quality to it. The inter-personal connections, the chatter, the making plans for the future, the dwelling on what happened in the past. It all draws our attention from the intuitive and creative side of our brain to the logical, action side of our brain. Before we realize it, we’ve switched from a human being to a human doing. What can we do to switch ourselves back into a state of being? A state of wonder and creativity?

Berkely University Professor, Kyra Bobinet, in her book on “A Well Designed Life” asks a similar question. What feels good about your current life, what’s working, and why is it working? How can you seek out more of what is working and turn towards that? How can you intentionally turn towards what supports and nourishes you?

At InspiritedLiving, we think it’s so important to take the time to ask yourself, how can I feel the fullness of this moment? Am I able to take a deep breath? Can I feel the rain or the sunlight and smell the changing seasons around me? Is it safe to stay in this moment? How long can I just be present in my life without turning away?

Living Life With Intention: You exist. You are worthy. It’s done.

As Lynne says in her video message this week, “Moments are not about justifying your existence. It’s justified. You exist. It’s not about proving your worthiness. It’s done. You’re worthy.”

How often do we think, if I just get this next promotion, this next title, this next trophy, this next thousand likes, I’ll have what I want. It’s exhausting to constantly be looking over the horizon to the next achievement; chasing the next thing that we think will bring us happiness, status, or power.

When we shift our mindset to “I am enough,” then we open ourselves to realizing our true worth in this world. We can also connect in a genuine and authentic way with a community of likeminded people. We can appreciate genuinely and without envy, the talents and achievements of those around us. By living life with intention, we can also appreciate our own gifts.

Living Life With Intention: The Quality of Your Experience in Life

So, how do we help ourselves be in the moment and not get caught up in the dramatic tempo of what’s going on around us? One way is to shift perspective from, I am not enough, I will never get it done, to noticing the quality of your life just as it is. What are you enjoying and what feels good? Where are the joyful moments and how can you allow, even invite more of them in?

Beauty actually exists in the transience of a moment. This moment with this person will never happen again. What is beautiful and joyful about this fleeting moment? It takes practice to slow down enough to cherish a moment. To notice and cherish the light, the sounds, the smells, even the fleeting feeling. And when we do, we are rewarded with the realization that just being is enough. That’s what living life with intention is about.

As Lynne says:
“No one’s taking score.
You get to choose.
The only measurement is the quality of your experience.
The joy you find in your life.”
