Cultivating Gratitude: The Science and Spirit of Thankfulness

As the year winds down, many people feel a mix of reflection and fatigue. Life moves fast, and it’s easy to focus on what still feels unfinished. Yet science—and lived experience—show us that gratitude can profoundly shift how we experience our days. Gratitude isn’t about pretending everything is perfect. It’s about learning to notice what is working, even in the middle of uncertainty. This simple shift in attention can restore balance, build resilience, and reconnect us with meaning. Guided by Lynne Bryan Phipps, Inspirited Living explores how gratitude helps us move from reaction to reflection—and from stress to steadiness. What Gratitude Does for the Brain and Body The benefits of gratitude are more than emotional; they’re physiological. Research from Harvard Health notes that people who regularly express gratitude experience improved mood, better sleep, and stronger immune response. Similarly, a National Institutes of Health study found that feelings of appreciation activate [...]

From Anxiety to Balance: Simple Practices for Stressful Transitions

It seems life is never simple; and life changes have a way of shaking things loose—new roles, a move, an emptying nest, a shift at work, even the turn of a season can cause us to feel unsettled and uncomfortable.   Anxiety often knocks loudly at these thresholds. It whispers worst-case scenarios and convinces us that more effort is the answer. But balance isn’t about doing more; it’s about choosing what actually steadies you. Our Higher Self: So Many Festivals of Lights!

At Inspirited Living we are supported this week by light. We know that for many people in the northern hemisphere the long nights and short days can feel heavy and dark. In this National Geographic story about Festivals of Lights, we feel supported by the reminder that all over the world and many different religious traditions light candles, put on light displays, and light bonfires to share joy, celebration, and hope for the return of the sun.

Our Higher Self: Rituals for Clearing the Air

As we enter the season of anticipation and incubation, we can take a few moments to clear the air. We are feeling uplifted this week by Marie Kondo’s calming use of palo alto, salt, incense, sage, and even tuning forks to clear the air. At Inspirited Living we love Marie Kondo’s emphasize on the intention behind the ritual: honoring the way our living spaces protect and nourish us during the year and allowing anything that has accumulated that we no longer need, to be released back into the world. Let us know if you have another way of clearing the air for the new growth to come!
